Substitute Teacher and Paraprofessional Certification Workshop

We offer a 3-day interactive workshop!

The Education Department at Missouri S&T offers 3-day Substitute Teacher and Paraprofessional Certification Workshops for those who are interested in becoming a substitute teacher or paraprofessional.  The presenters will be interactive and you will be expected to share in groups and present one, ten minute lesson to the group.  You will be assigned a topic the first day.  You must attend all 3 days in their entirety and pass all assessments to receive a completion certificate.

This interactive workshop is approved by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for paraprofessional and substitute teacher certification. Topics include legal responsibilities, student engagement, classroom management, instructional strategies, honoring diversity and students with special needs.

The registration fee for this workshop is $200. Additional information on how to pay is included on the google registration form. Payment must be received before you receive a completion certificate.

If a school district has agreed to pay for your registration, you can communicate this on the google form when you register for the workshop. If you are made aware that a district will be paying for your registration after you have already registered, please email education@mst.edu.

We encourage everyone who has registered for the workshop to apply for a content substitute teacher certificate; this requires a processing fee of $50. This requires creating an account in the certification system here: https://dese.mo.gov/educator-quality/certification/substitute-teachers

To be employed by a school district, either as a paraprofessional or a substitute, you will need to be fingerprinted.  You should ask the school district where you wish to work what their four digit fingerprint code is, or it may be available online.  The processing fee is $41.75.

You will receive your completion certificate via email no later than one week after workshop completion. You must attend all 3 days in their entirety and pass all assessments in able to receive a completion certificate. 

Before attending the workshop, we strongly encourage you to complete mandated reporter training at https://protectmokids.com/dashboard.  As a substitute teacher, you are a legally required mandated reporter.  It is vital you understand these responsibilities before starting on the path to substitute teaching.

If you have applied for the content substitute teacher certificate before the workshop, you should be issued an Educator ID through that process. We will need this number from you during the workshop to process your workshop completion certificate. 

*If you do not have access to a computer, we will have some available for you to use during the workshop. 

A high school diploma , GED or high school equivalency test is required to enroll in the workshop. 

If you are under the age of 18 at the time of workshop completion, you will not be able to apply for a sub certificate until you turn 18.

If you have a laptop or tablet, please bring it.  If you do not have one, we will provide one for you to use during the workshop. 

We recommend you dress comfortably in layers because workshop locations can get cold/warm.

No. You may bring a lunch with you, but please be advised you will not have access to a microwave or fridge on site. You will be able to leave for lunch break, and there are several restaurant options available within a short distance of the workshop location.

No. The Education Department at Missouri S&T has been approved through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer this training outside of the context of course, as a 3-day in-person workshop.

No. At this workshop we are going to be offering the training to be a substitute or paraprofessional.  Once you have satisfied all workshop training requirements, you will receive a workshop completion certificate to provide to DESE.

You’ll need to submit any necessary information/documents to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) through their certificate application process.  DESE is the one who will actually grant or deny your substitute or paraprofessional certificate after reviewing all documents, background check and any other requirements.
