Teaching middle school is a challenging but rewarding career. Missouri and many other states are experiencing a teacher shortage, particularly in rural areas, so there are plenty of jobs available! At S&T, students seeking middle school certification earn a Bachelor of Science in Education with an emphasis in English, math, science or social studies. Experiences in schools are embedded throughout the program, beginning second semester freshman year. The program balances rigorous content knowledge with a commitment to building engaging learning experiences in small, interactive education courses.
Students seeking middle school certification (grades 5-9) will choose one of the following content areas:
Education BS - Middle School English Emphasis
Education BS - Middle School Math Emphasis
Education BS - Middle School Science Emphasis
Education BS - Middle School Social Studies Emphasis
Before applying for student teaching, students should pass the appropriate Praxis test and complete all professional requirements and content courses with a 3.0 GPA. Missouri S&T allows students to choose their student teaching placement, if the district agrees and a qualified cooperating teacher is available.
This program is approved by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. License reciprocity determinations outside of Missouri can be found at https://teaching.missouri.edu/student/state-authorization/mst/licensure
Missouri S&T expects each student to complete experiential learning activities; the field experience courses EDUC 1104, 1164, 3298, and 4299 meet this requirement for the B.S. in Education.
